M.V.TAIHO
MV Taiho (‘Heart of the Tree’) is a classic 40′ carvel-planked launch, built in 1957 from one-inch kauri plank by Swanson’s boatyard in Picton. She is powered by a 115hp Ford diesel motor and weighs 15 tonnes. Taiho is fully equipped with all the required safety equipment and holds an up to date survey certificate to carry nine passengers on day trips and six passengers overnight. There is an external shower, a flush toilet and a well-equipped galley with basic foods such as tea, coffee, sauces and condiments.
Skipper Peter McKenzie has been a commercial fisherman in the waters of the Coromandel Peninsula, Great Barrier Island, Cuvier and the Mercury Islands Group for the past twenty-five years. The first 20 as a long-liner and the last 5 years as a charter skipper with experience in tuna trolling and long-lining. Besides knowing the best fishing spots based on time and tide, Peter also has considerable experience in fish handling and preparation. He is a wealth of information on local history, flora and fauna and is familiar with the remote wilderness areas of the Hauraki Gulf that are accessible only by sea. He is knowledgeable about the unique species of bird, fish, whales and dolphins that abound in the Hauraki Gulf and its outlying islands, as well as local fish migration patterns and the location of gannet colonies.
Join Taiho for a fishing trip or cruise in the waters of the Coromandel Peninsula to Great Barrier Island, Cuvier and the Mercury Islands Group and learn about their history, wildlife and cultural heritage.
